How Much HP Do You Need?
The motor power rating you get is based on the available power you have in your shop. Do to how VFDs work you can not pull more than 1.5hp from a 20amp, 120volt outlet. For this reason you do NOT want to run a 2hp motor on a 120v outlet. Under powering a 2hp motor gives you less performance then overclocking a 1.5hp motor. Your belt grinders performance is directly tied to how fast your belt moves, and whether or not that belt speed can be maintained while you press your work piece into it. If you want to maximize your power from a 120volt outlet you need to use a 1.5hp motor.
If you have 220 volt single phase power you can run up to 5hp. To be honest 2hp is the biggest bang for your buck. A good rule of thumb is 1hp per inch of belt width. The cost goes up quite a bit as you increase to 3hp and beyond.
